A leading dairy producer in the Benelux wanted to have its spray-drying installation thoroughly reviewed. Not because of any immediate faults, but driven by the ambition to further optimize the process, modernize it and make it future-proof. RvS Group carried out an extensive baseline measurement and delivered a concrete advisory report and investment budget as the basis for a multi-year vision.
Project overview
The client operates an active spray-drying process for the production of dairy powder. The existing installation was performing well, but the organization had clear ambitions: to further optimize the process, improve safety, increase sustainability and create capacity for expanding the product portfolio. To translate these ambitions into concrete investments, an objective and complete picture of the current situation was needed first.
RvS Group was asked to carry out this baseline measurement and, based on the findings, to prepare an advisory report and budget estimate.
Challenge
With projects like this, the challenge is not purely technical. A spray-drying installation is a complex system of process equipment, measurement instrumentation, control systems and supporting utilities. To form a reliable picture of the current state, technical inspections, process analyses and conversations with people on the shop floor all need to be combined.
In addition, the baseline measurement had to go beyond a snapshot. The findings had to be directly translatable into a realistic multi-year vision, with attention to safety and risk management, reliability, sustainability and the client’s strategic growth objectives.
Our approach
RvS Group started the project with thorough preparation. Based on the available documentation and an initial orientation of the process, an approach was developed for the inspections and analyses.
Multiple site visits were then carried out. During these visits, process parameters were measured and analyzed. The condition and state of installations and equipment were visually inspected and assessed. Automation solutions and control software were checked for currency and functionality. Bottlenecks, risks and improvement opportunities were systematically mapped.
An important part of the approach was the conversations with operators, the technical department and other involved staff. The practical knowledge of the people who work with the installation daily is valuable for identifying recurring issues, process limitations and opportunities that don’t always emerge from technical documentation. In the dairy industry, hygienic design principles also play a role in the assessment of installations and equipment.
By combining technical inspection with operational insights, a complete and reliable picture of the current situation emerged. This reflects the way RvS Group approaches process engineering: technically grounded and closely aligned with operational practice.
Realization
The collected information was analyzed and consolidated into a structured whole. All findings were provided with a technical interpretation: what is the cause of a bottleneck, what are the risks if the current situation remains unchanged, and which improvements are technically and operationally feasible?
The findings were translated into concrete improvement measures, ranked by priority and categorized by theme, such as safety, reliability, automation, sustainability and expansion opportunities. Each measure was accompanied by an estimated investment cost.
In consultation with the client’s wishes and strategic objectives, this analysis formed the basis for a concrete plan of action. This plan describes the required improvement measures, the phasing of the work, and the investments needed to achieve the desired situation.
Delivery
RvS Group delivered the following documents:
- An extensive advisory report with all findings, analyses and improvement measures
- An accompanying budget estimate with an investment overview per measure
- A concrete plan of action as the basis for further implementation
The documents were aligned with the client’s strategic objectives and provide a clear basis for decision-making at management and executive level.
Results
The client now has a complete and objective analysis of its spray-drying installation. The advisory report provides insight into the technical condition of the installation, the risks associated with the current situation and the concrete steps needed to improve the process.
The proposed measures contribute to a safer and more stable production process. At the same time, they create room for expanding the product portfolio and further improving the sustainability of production. The budget estimate gives the client control over the required investments and enables phased decision-making.
